Inspiration is something that we as humans take for granted. We tend to believe that through our own imagination, we are able to create something original. We tend to under-estimate the power of inspiration, thinking that our ideas are completely self-generated, when in fact our ideas are derived from the environment around us.
In my opinion, the mind-set of deemphasizing the importance of what we see, hear and intake is dangerous to the Christian creative.
As creatives, if our work is not for our own edification, it is used as a marketing tool for other ministries and churches. In fact, our work is one of the first things people see when being introduced to any evangelistic effort.
If that is the case, wouldn’t it be important for us to consistently prepare mentally like the evangelist, ministers and laymens we represent?
Imagine a pastor watching 30 Rock while preparing for a sermon to his/her congregation. Imagine him/her laughing at Alec Baldwin’s immoral antics in the midst of searching through the scripture on the importance of moral ethic. It seems almost unimaginable right? Well, sometimes we creatives undervalue our role in ministry.
As Christian creatives, we have to have the same mindset that our ministers, pastors, evangelists and laymen have. If our inspiration comes from our surroundings, we need to create an environment where we are as sober in mind as the ministers we represent.
